Meet the CUPE Education Workers’ Benefits Trust

The CUPE Education Workers’ Benefits Trust (the CUPE EWBT) is an employee life and health trust (ELHT) managed by a Board of Trustees, including representatives from the Crown, the Council of Trustees’ Associations and the OSBCU — united in service to support education workers’ health and well-being now and into the future.

Who is the CUPE EWBT?

Your benefits are provided through the Canadian Union of Public Employees Education Workers’ Benefits Trust (the CUPE EWBT), an independent benefits trust established to manage and administer your life, AD&D, health, and dental benefits. The CUPE EWBT holds a collective fund, set aside specifically to ensure that you and your family have access to the benefits you need. For more information about where this funding comes from, see Funding & Governance.

In the past, education workers in Ontario received benefits from their employer, the school board. Then, in 2018, the Ontario government established the CUPE EWBT to unite benefits decision-making and take advantage of collective buying power to get the best benefits possible for education workers province-wide.
Providing benefits through a trust offers some key advantages, including stable, sustainable access to coverage without the ongoing challenge of locally bargaining benefits. The size of our combined membership means greater buying power and related financial advantages – as well as greater benefits security for you. That said, maintaining a stable plan for the future will depend on plan performance and the OSBCU’s ability to negotiate funding with the government. That’s why it’s so important that you use your plan for the benefits you need – that’s what it’s there for – but also that you use it responsibly.

Who Receives Benefits from the CUPE EWBT?

The OSBCU & the CUPE EWBT

The Ontario School Board Council of Unions (OSBCU) unites 55,000 CUPE Ontario education workers in the public, Catholic, English, and French school systems across the province.
