File a Claim

Submitting your claims can be simple and straightforward when you know the steps. Explore below to learn how to get your claims processed quickly and smoothly.

Prescription Drugs

When you need to fill a prescription, simply show your Canada Life digital benefits card at the pharmacy. The pharmacist will handle the claim electronically with Canada Life, and you’ll only need to pay any amount that isn’t covered.

Prior Authorization

Some prescriptions (such as medications with multiple uses or specialty drugs) require prior authorization (pre-approval) to determine if they’ll be covered. If your pharmacist informs you that your prescription requires prior authorization, you’ll need to go through the FACET drug prior authorization program to first confirm that the drug will be covered, before having your prescription filled.

Health and Dental Claims

Most health and dental claims can be submitted online through the My Canada Life at Work member site or app.

Many dentists and other health providers can also submit claims directly to Canada Life on your behalf – this is known as direct billing or eClaims. Ask your provider if they’re registered for eClaims with Canada Life.

Submit Your Claims Promptly

Be sure to submit your claim to Canada Life as soon as possible, and no later than 12 months after receiving a treatment, supply, or device.

Submitting an Estimate (Predetermination)

For any health or dental services expected to cost over $300, we recommend submitting an estimate (also known as a pre-approval or predetermination) to Canada Life before incurring the expense. This ensures you’re not left with unexpected out-of-pocket costs for things like:

  • Orthotics or orthopaedic shoes
  • Compression hose (stockings)
  • Home nursing care
  • Medical devices or equipment (for example, CPAP machines, glucose monitors, or wheelchairs)
  • Costly dental work (for example crowns, bridges or dentures)
  • Orthodontics (braces)

Most dentists can submit a predetermination on your behalf. For other health expenses, you can submit a predetermination following similar steps as when you make a claim, using the My Canada Life at Work member site or app. Just make sure to clearly label it as an “Estimate”.

Canada Life will review the request and confirm the amount they will cover. This helps you know exactly what to expect.

Life Insurance or Accidental Death & Dismemberment (AD&D) Insurance Claims

For life or AD&D insurance claims, please contact OTIP. Their representatives will guide you (or your beneficiary) through the required steps.
